Calling All Colors 2018: a Celebration of Multi-Culturalism

The congregation of Mother Emanuel AME Church and Palmetto Community Action Partnership (CAP) invite the Charleston community to a free one-day camp for young people (ages 10-14) on June 21st to celebrate multi-culturalism and diversity through collaborative art projects. Children will also gain tools to combat bullying and process tragedy.

This interactive event is being held in conjunction with the Emanuel Commemoration Committee’s official Light of Hope activities to celebrate the enduring legacy of the Emanuel 9 and the survivors.

Based on a curriculum developed at Coastal Carolina University, children will learn how to appreciate diversity and differences and how to promote multi-culturalism in their schools and communities. The College of Charleston's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion and various artists from the community will help facilitate activities.

Lunch will be provided.

During the afternoon, the children will be divided into collaborative clusters and will create a presentation based on one of 12 talents (art, dance, choir, poetry, drama, storytelling, song analysis, drumming, documentary analysis and more).

Volunteers are needed from 8:00am-4:00pm to assist with registration, lunch and talent clusters. Volunteers from the arts community are needed to facilitate these sessions. Please indicate interest in talent clusters and job duties by registering under the Volunteer ticket.

Adults are able to participate in morning and afternoon educational sessions led by the MUSC Empowerment Center. Topics include how parents can help children cope with tragedy and how to properly respond to bullying.

Supervision is provided by pre-screened volunteers and Charleston Police Department. Parents and group chaperones are welcome to tour the beautiful city of Charleston during the conference.

If you're interested in leading an art cluster related to diversity, please contact Savannah Murray at 843-724-6760 ext. 223 or smurray@palmettocap.org

Registration required. Please register by June 15th in order to get lunch and a t-shirt. Because we need specific information from each participant, attendees must register as individuals even if they're coming as part of a group. Please indicate any organizational affiliations under the "Organization" category. Groups are expected to stay for the duration of the activities.
